Get ready for OnePlus to kick off 2019 with a bang.
For the past few years, OnePlus has followed a pretty typical release cycle — one new phone comes out in the first half of the year and then an iterative upgrade of that phone towards the end of the year.
OnePlus is shaking up that pattern a bit in 2019 with an additional 5G-capable phone on top of its two other handsets, expected to be the OnePlus 7 and 7T.
The OnePlus 7 is the phone we're looking forward to the most right now, and while details on it are still few and far between, here's what we're expecting to see.
Hole-punch notch
The OnePlus 6 was OnePlus's first phone to have a notch, and compared to devices like the iPhone X, LG G7, and others, it was a pretty typical notch. Just a few months later, the OnePlus 6T was unveiled with a much smaller teardrop-style one that took up far less space.
OnePlus has proven to adapt quickly to trends in the smartphone industry, and as such, I think we can expect the company to make a change once more with a hole-punch notch for the OnePlus 7.
As seen in devices such as the Honor View 20 and leaked photos of the Galaxy S10 series, the hole-punch notch typically has a small cutout at the top left or right corner of a screen where the front-facing camera is housed. It's smaller than other notches we've seen so far, and depending on who you ask, is also the best-looking implementation.
While this wouldn't functionally change anything with the OnePlus 7 compared to the 6 and 6T, it seems like a very OnePlus-esque move for the company to make.
Snapdragon 855 processor
Ever since the original OnePlus One, something we've come to expect from OnePlus phones is that they'll be powered by the latest and greatest Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.
With no reason to believe that will change this year, it shouldn't come as any surprise that the OnePlus 7 will likely be powered by the Snapdragon 855.
Highlights of the 855 include dedicated processing for AI capabilities, 45% faster processor speeds compared to the 845, 20% better GPU performance, and more.

A faster in-display fingerprint sensor
The OnePlus 6T is one hell of a smartphone, but one bet that OnePlus made with it didn't turn out to be as good as we were hoping.
After using a traditional rear-mounted fingerprint sensor on the 6, OnePlus decided to outfit the 6T with an in-display sensor. While it certainly looks cool and is a neat party trick, it's proven to be slower and less reliable than the 6's sensor in day-to-day use.
OnePlus has said that the 6T's sensor gets smarter and faster each time you use it, but with the 7, I expect to see an improved version of this tech that allows it to be more reliable from day one.
Warp Charge
In an attempt to end 2018 on a high-note, OnePlus announced the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition in mid-December as a limited edition variant of the already great 6T. While the McLaren Edition was mostly the same phone as the base 6T, it did come with two big upgrades — 2GB extra RAM for a total of 10GB and a new charging system called "Warp Charge."
First introduced in 2016, OnePlus Fast Charge (formerly known as Dash Charge) has been one of the fastest smartphone charging systems to-date by delivering a 50% charge in just 30 minutes. With Warp Charge, you can now get that 50% charge in 20 minutes using 30 watts of power.
The OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition is currently the only OnePlus phone that supports Warp Charge, but I think it's safe to say that we'll see it expand to the OnePlus 7 later this year.
Three (or more) rear cameras
Cameras have never been a strong suit for OnePlus phones, but with the 6 and 6T's surprisingly great dual rear cameras, OnePlus made considerable improvements all-around compared to its past devices.
OnePlus was pretty fast to hop on the dual camera train, joining the trend as early as June 2017 with the OnePlus 5. Camera systems with three or more sensors were all the rage in 2018, and I think this is the year we see OnePlus's take on this.
We've already seen one leaked photo that shows a mystery OnePlus phone with a pretty large camera module on the back, capable of housing at least three camera sensors.
