If you just purchased your first PlayStation 4, you may find yourself feeling overwhelmed sheer volume titles. The console has been out for some time which means that the catalog is incredibly deep and diverse. This is a boon for new PlayStation 4 users because this robust catalog means that there is something great out there for every type of gamer. Welcome to the world of PlayStation 4. I hope you enjoy your time here. Allow me to share with you some of the games for the PS4 that will help you kicked off your experience in an awesome fashion.
For the superhero fan
Marvel's Spider-Man
The list of developers that have taken a swing at designing a game dedicated to everybody's favorite web-slinger is seemingly endless. However, if you want to jump into the most satisfying Spiderman experience ever delivered on a console, then you should most definitely pick up a copy of Marvel's Spider-Man. I don't think there is currently a video game on the market that can cater to the needs and desires of superhero fans quite the way this one does.
For fans of story and strong female characters
Horizon: Zero Dawn
When I first saw the trailer for this game a few years ago I thought to myself, "I already played this when it was called Turok." I could not have been more wrong. This game has just about everything going for it. Visually, it is simply beautiful. Traversing the gorgeous and diverse scenery in order to take down massive robots and forward the engaging story line is insanely satisfying. And to top it all off Horizon: Zero Dawn features one of the most badass main characters I've had the pleasure of playing in recent years.
For multiplayer FPS fans
Overwatch
If you're a fan of multiplayer first-person shooters and you don't have this sort of schedule that allows you to sit down and play for hours at a time, then Overwatch may be perfect for you. A game is packed with an ever-growing roster of diverse characters with unique skill sets. And Blizzards ability to balance and game and maintain playability make of this one of my favorite games to pick up and play when I only have half an hour
For fans of Japanese film and general weirdness
Yakuza 0
Oh, man, do I love this game. The story and characters make you feel as if you are actually playing a Japanese gangster film. There may be times where the combat feels a bit on the rinse and repeat side, however, there is so much going on in this game that you will never be bored. Yakuza 0 strikes a wild and admirable balance between drama, comedy, and outright strangeness. If I'm going to be frank, I have to admit that I probably spent as much time playing the host club mini-game as I did plane through the main storyline.
For those who want to tacitly work out their father issues
God of War
The God of War franchise was beginning to a bit long in the tooth. Recent entries into the franchise had seen main character Kratos turn into a bit of a caricature. However, this release provides an amazing and well-needed depth of character. While you are busy reveling in stellar storylines and killer combat mechanics you might just find yourself having your heartstrings tugged in a way that you were not expecting.
For the good, the bad, and the ugly
Red Dead Redemption 2
Definitely one of the newest titles on this list, Red Dead Redemption 2 is an absolutely stellar game. If you have ever wanted to wander the old west with your trusty horse and revolver at your hip, then this is most decidedly the game for you. I am personally only about halfway through the game but the visual beauty and depth of gameplay are absolutely staggering. I highly recommend it.
For those who think it belongs in a museum
Uncharted 4
If you have ever had the desire to consume a blockbuster popcorn film in video game form, then Uncharted 4 may be right up your alley. This game is so tight you can bounce a quarter off of it. The storyline itself may not be dealing with the largest most life-altering concepts but it is incredibly well written. In addition, you'll be treated to gorgeous graphics, amazing set pieces, and downright awesome gameplay.
For those who care enough to play the very best JRPG
Persona 5
If you are a fan of Japanese role-playing games or if you ever had the desire to try one out, you're in luck. Persona 5 is one of the absolute best JRPG's to come out in recent years. Persona 5 does a fantastic job delivering everything one might want from a JRPG title. Beautiful visual design, a super tight combat system, and an engaging soundtrack will keep your controller glued to your hand for many hours.
Play all the parts in a Quentin Tarantino film
Grand Theft Auto V
If you are in the market for some all over the top everything, then you might as well go for the standard bearer when it comes to over the top everything. Dive into a world of foul-mouthed gangsters and blood hungry psychopaths in GTA V. It may not be for all ages, but its open world, engaging storyline, and over the top action is well worth the price of admission for any adults willing to buy the ticket and take the ride.
For those who believe that medium is the message
Nier: Automata
Right off the bat, I would like to point out that on a surface level Nier: Automata is an absolutely incredible action game in its own right. However, there is so much more to this game than the surface level. If you were a lifelong gamer and always wanted to see designers push the boundaries of what could be done in a game, then this is the game for you. Nier: Automata is so much more than just a game, it's an experience that is not to be missed.
There are so many amazing games on the PS4 that you could spend years playing nothing but the very best games. Hopefully, this brief list will help you kick off your PS4 experience in the best way possible. If you're looking for the most immersive, generation-defining experience right now, then check out Red Dead Redemption 2. It'll last you a while. Now get out there and start gaming!
