And, yes, you can once again customize the notch.
Even though the long-term future of Essential still remains a mystery, the company continues to update the Essential Phone faster than just about anyone else out there. The October 2018 security patch was just released earlier today, and right behind it, Essential's already announced that the patch is rolling out to its customers.

Along with the regular bug fixes that are found with this patch, Essential's also bringing back notch support — allowing you to determine how the notch area of the phone is used by apps.
Even if an Essential Phone 2 never does happen, all other OEMs really need to take a note from what Essential's doing here. Day-one update support like this is fantastic, and it's something a lot of competing brands cough Samsung cough could take note of.
