Update Sept. 28, 2018: This week, we recommend the dark and challenging action found in Aminus - Harbinger!
Animus - Harbinger
Dark Souls is one of those games that's designed to be punishingly difficult to pick up and play, but immensely rewarding when you finally master your combat skills and start finishing off those pesky enemies.
For those who have played Dark Souls on console or PC and want a similar experience on mobile, you should check out Animus - Harbinger. This is the latest entry in the Animus series and borrows heavily from the Dark Souls format, from the character design and combat to the dark themes and premise that everything you run into is trying to kill you. As you might expect, the mobile game does not include an open world to explore as found in Dark Souls, but instead, your journey is broken into bite-sized chunks that are better set for shorter gaming sessions.
Unlike previous Animus games, Harbinger is free to download and try — you'll get to experience the first battle against the Breach Knight. This should give you a decent taste of the gameplay, as you're forced to dodge and block the powerful knight's attacks while countering with your own.
Games such as this aren't for everyone. Beyond the violent nature that's probably not appropriate for younger kids, the combat is designed to punish the player for mistakes and reward those who hang back, learn the enemies attack patterns, and then launch strategic counters to get the upper hand. If you love the free trial you get, it's just $3.99 to unlock the full game which includes the main quests and two sub-quests
The game requires 1.3GB of storage and a phone with 2GB of RAM or above running Android 8.0 or higher.
Download: Animus - Harbinger (Free, $3.99 to unlock full game)
