Update Sept. 21, 2018: This week, we're looking at an awesome RPG, Phantomgate: The Last Valkyrie, from Netmarble!

Phantomgate: The Last Valkyrie

Hardcore fans of roleplaying adventure games are right to be a bit wary of new mobile RPGs. All too often, these games are designed to be repetitive grinding sessions designed to get you hooked on leveling up your characters with flashy graphics, perhaps, but hampered by lackluster storytelling and otherwise rushed production values. Netmarble's latest release, Phantomgate, does a great job of bucking those trends.

Phantomgate blends 2D platforming puzzles with a turn-based RPG combat system that feels refreshingly unique among the mobile RPG genre.

The story is based on Norse mythology and follows the path of a young Valkyrie named Astrid who has set off to save her mother from Odin. To do so, she will need to learn how to use the hidden powers passed down through her lineage as she explores realms filled with dangerous phantoms. As you progress through your journey, you're able to befriend these phantoms and add them to your party as you engage in epic battles against Odin's dark forces.

Phantomgate blends 2D platforming puzzles with a turn-based RPG combat system that feels refreshingly unique among the mobile RPG genre. Instead of grinding through the same enemies over and over again, each battle feels unique and will require your full attention and best strategies to succeed. This game looks beautiful with well-designed characters battling against beautiful backgrounds and the story is told through outstanding voice acting — something that is exceedingly rare from mobile games these days and deserves much praise.

The game features six chapters which each feature multiple stages that culminate with an epic boss battle, and there are over 300 phantom companions and four additional heroes to unlock as you progress through the game. Beyond that, there are special events to participate in to earn in-game currencies along with — you guessed it — in-app purchases to buy gems which can be spent on most things.

The good news is that Phantomgate is more than satisfying to play without requiring you to pay-to-win, although the game does award you loyal points for spending gems which, in time, allow you to unlock special phantoms for your party and that might be enough incentive for some folks to drop some cash into this game.
