Everything you need to know about the newly launched OnePlus 6
OnePlus, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, launched its much awaited flagship smartphone, OnePlus 6 at an event in London on Wednesday.
Looking to target Apple loyalists, the OnePlus 6 comes with incremental updates over its predecessor, OnePlus 5T and will be offering an iPhone X-like “notch” display and will be available for less than half the price. While iPhone X-style notch may not please everyone, it serves a design-specific purpose.
OnePlus 6 is said to be the company’s first flagship smartphone with glass on the front and back, and has replaced the unibody aluminum case that OnePlus has been using for a number of years. The smartphone also features a 6.28-inch full HD+ (2280 x 1080) Optic AMOLED display, with aspect ratio of 19:9. It also comes with support for DCI-P3 colors, which makes the colors look richer and warmer.
Under the hood of the smartphone runs Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 64-bit octa-core SoC, which includes the Adreno 630 GPU. OnePlus 6 will run OxygenOS 5.1 based on the latest version of Android 8.1 Oreo and is also eligible for Android P public beta.
Further, the OnePlus 6 comes in three storage variants, 6GB RAM (LPDDR4X RAM) variant with 64GB of storage and 8GB RAM model which is available in both 128GB and 256GB (UFS 2.1) storage options. However, it’s worth noting that the internal storage in either of these variants of OnePlus is not expandable.
OnePlus is powered by a 3,300 mAh battery, which can be recharged quickly using OnePlus’s proprietary Dash Charge fast charging technology offered through the USB-C port by the bundled 5V 4A charger. In other words, this technology will give the smartphone a day’s worth of battery in just 30 minutes.
On the camera front, OnePlus 6 sports a dual-camera setup which is a combination of 20MP (f/1.7 aperture) and 16MP (f/1.7 aperture, Sony’s IMX519 sensor, 1.22um pixel size) sensors. The dual camera features optical image stabilization (OIS), electronic image stabilization (EIS), and slow motion video recording at 480fps. It also supports 4K video recording. On the connectivity front, it includes Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi, and NFC.
The company has moved the alert notification slider to the right, which is just above the power button. As a result, the left side of panel now has the volume button and the SIM tray, and at the bottom rest the speaker, Type-C charging port along with a 3.5mm audio port. The OnePlus 6 also supports dual-SIM feature.
The OnePlus 6 sports a cubicle fingerprint sensor under the rear camera module, which the company claims can unlock the device within 0.2 seconds. It also comes with ‘Face Unlock’ feature claimed to unlock the device within 0.4 seconds. The smartphone measures 155.7 x 75.35 x 7.75 mm, and weighs in at 177 grams. Although not an IP-certified phone, the OnePlus 6 is water resistant against wet hands, splashes, light rain etc.
Starting May 22, the OnePlus 6 will be available in Midnight and Mirror Black color options. The OnePlus 6 (6GB/64GB) variant will be available for $529, while the OnePlus 6 top-end versions with 8GB/128GB and 8GB/256GB storage variants will be available for $579 and $629 respectively. The Silk White variant of the smartphone will be available starting June 5. The phone will be available direct from OnePlus’ online store in North America, India, and across Europe.
