How we're spending our leisure time.
Everyone has a bit of quiet downtime once in a while. Whether you're sitting quietly at home or trying to relax on a plane or just giving your busy mind and hands a break, it's important to relax.
A good way to do that is to read a book, listen to some music or watch a movie or show. See what's caught our attention for the week of December 15.

This week, I stayed focused on going through my back catalog of movies and shows I have in my Plex library. My favorite from this week was Life After Beth. Aubrey Plaza plays a zombie who starts out normal but gets progressively worse over the course of the film, which is the perfect role for her. For TV, I watched the big Crisis on Earth X crossover between all of CW's DC Comics shows, and it was fantastic. It felt like a proper crossover, while last year's effort was a bit halfhearted.
I haven't listened to any new music this week, but I did renew my Marvel Unlimited subscription. Before bed Tuesday night, I read all of Hulk: Gray by Tim Sale and Jeph Loeb, a beautifully drawn retelling of Hulk's origin.

'Tis the season for holiday specials, and while there are many, many holiday movies and episodes that aren't worth the data they're encoded in, I have found myself revisiting a couple of my holiday favorites. The first is a 2000 version of The Royal Ballet's The Nutcracker that I bought my freshman year of college. The staging and orchestration of this performance entrance me, and I adore Anthony Dowell's take on Herr Drosselmeyer. This rendition may be almost 20 years old, but I think I'll watch it 20 more times.

All I want for Christmas is a fourth season of HBO's Deadwood. Instead, I got Godless.
Netflix's take on the serialized western, every episode of which is written and directed by Logan scribe, Scott Frank, isn't quite as lyrical as Deadwood, but its characters are just as vibrant, and the stakes just as high.
While I'm less than taken with the one-dimensional outlaw persona of Jeff Daniels' Frank Griffin, everyone else in the show — especially the incredible women that make up the all-female town of La Belle — is at their best. The story doesn't quite get going until halfway through the seven-episode miniseries, but you'll be glad you stuck around until the end.

I was pretty sick this past weekend, so I took advantage of the downtime by finally catching up on some movies I had missed this past summer. One of those movies was Spiderman: Homecoming, and it was fantastic.
I never really bought into the hype when the movie first came out because I was getting annoyed with how many reboot attempts Sony had gone through since the first Spiderman movie with Tobey Maguire debuted in 2002. I mean, I was just getting along with the idea of Andrew Garfield being Spiderman and the Sinister Six storyline they had going with The Amazing Spiderman, and then here we go with another reboot? Fortunately, this one was to formally add Spiderman into the official and ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe and it delivered across the board. I can't wait until this one comes to Netflix so I can revisit it over and over again.
Until then, Spiderman: Homecoming is available to rent or to buy on Google Play.

I don't get to play my PS4 nearly as much as I'd like to, and because of this, I'm often late to the party when it comes to playing through a lot of games. I just jumped into Horizon Zero Dawn for the very first time, and as soon as the intro sequence completed, I immediately started kicking myself in the butt for not playing this sooner. I've played a lot of open world titles over the years, but even after just a few hours in, I can already tell this is going to be one of the most memorable.
Between the story, crazy good gameplay, and stupidly good graphics that are reason enough on their own to pick up a PS4 Pro, this is a really, really special game.
We recently got heaps of snow dumped on us in Michigan just in time for Christmas, and to help ring in the icy roads and slush-filled sidewalks, I've been going through Starbucks' Christmas Party playlist on Spotify. There's a surprisingly good mix of holiday tunes here, ranging from classic Mariah Carey to modern hip-hop remixes of Frank Sinatra.

I'm a bit late, but I've finally started watching The Office, and I have no idea what took me so long. I just wrapped up season two yesterday and I'm already itching to see where the Jim-Pam and Michael/Jan relationships go.
As far as music goes, I've been sort of taking a break from my usual prog metal lineup and revisiting an old favorite, TTNG. They're one of the original math rock bands that really sparked my interest in music with odd time signatures, and I love the laid back and melancholy nature of their writing. Their album Animals is one of my all-time favorites, but 13.0.0.0.0 is definitely worth a listen, too.
